New PC

Post by SAMO »

Hey guyzzz,

as I told you on Vash's UT4 topic, I"m looking forward to buy a new computer.
I got it done by a friend but he told me to have it checked by someone more experienced than both of us. So I'd like some feedback about this config, my budget is 1300 euros.

- Processor: Intel Core i5-4590 (3.3 GHz): 216.90 €
- Motherboard: MSI Z97 GAMING 3: 141.90 €
- dDR memory: DDR3 Kingston HyperX Fury, 2 x 8 Go, 1600 MHz, CAS 10: 104.90 €
- Ventirad: Be Quiet ! Shadow Rock 2: 42.90 €
- Graphic Card: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 Windforce 3, 4 Go: 347.90 €
- Hard disk: Western Digital Caviar Blue, 1 To: 58.90 €
- SSD: Kingston Now V300, 120 Go, SATA III: 59.80 €
- Engraver: Samsung SH-224FB/BEBE, Black: 19.90 €
- (Cables SATA 45 cm, TopAchat: 2.90 €)
- Housing: Corsair Graphite 230T Noir: 78.80 €
- Power supply: Cooler Master B500 v2, 500W: 47.90 €
- Screen: LG 22M47VQ 129.80 €

Total price: 1252.50 €

I'd like another screen tbh, something not tiny but not too big
What do you think?

Prepare your anus samo.

Better mobo for 4 euro http://www.amazon.fr/MSI-GAMING-Carte-I ... i+gaming+5" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

You don't need a cooler that expensive since you have chosen a CPU without an unlocked multiplier.

Much faster ram for just a bit more: http://www.amazon.fr/HyperX-M%C3%A9moir ... 400mhz+8gb" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I would also stretch to 250GB SSD, 128 runs out fast.

I would not waste so much money on a motherboard. Get a standard one, same performance, less useless crap such as "gaming look".

This one for example, got pretty much everything you need: http://www.amazon.fr/ASRock-H97-Carte-I ... k+h97+pro4" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I would also rather get this card, if you want Nvidia:
http://www.amazon.fr/MSI-graphique-Nvid ... tx+970+msi" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Better quality, lower noise. Gigabyte is a fuckshit brand.

Alternative from AMD:
http://www.amazon.fr/Sapphire-Nitro-gra ... ds=390+8gb" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
8GB VRAM, good for upcoming games.

I also agree on getting a bigger SSD. 128GB is getting full pretty fast. Probably this one, very good value:
http://www.amazon.fr/Crucial-BX100-Disq ... =bx100+250" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Hmm Samo, you probably should wait like 1 week. Intel Skylake is getting released!

Probably this CPU:
http://www.amazon.fr/Intel-Skylake-Proc ... s=i5+6600k" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Probably this board:
http://geizhals.de/asrock-z170-pro4-90- ... 06602.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
(Can't find it on Amazon.fr)

Probably this RAM:
http://www.amazon.fr/Crucial-CL15-M%C3% ... +2133+16gb" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

In Germany Skylake is already available for like a few days.

The difference between intel generations since Sandybridge is very small, especially Skylake so you will be fine with the previous gen i5 unless you plan to run dual gpu, in which case you need to go i7 anyway. II was going to upgrade to Skylake but it is irrelevant compared to X99 as it has less features and minimal performance increases in games, worse in everything else and only slightly cheaper.

Random curveball, not my recommendation but an option. Have you considered second hand cpu/mobo? Can pickup i7 2600 + motherboard + ram for about 250-300 if you shop around. Press a few keys when booting PC, type 42 and another key to get 4.2Ghz 4core/8thread. Destroys Skylake i5s with ease. Inb4 someone comments 'but they're old', 'games don't use 8 threads' BS.

I recommended the MSI Gaming 5 because its one of the best boards for the socket, if you never plan to go dual gpu or overclock, find something cheaper as you won't need the features. About 100 will get a nice mid range board.

And Vash, recommending AMD gpu? They've been shit since 7xxx. Who needs 8GB VRAM? You don't even need that for 4K and by the time people use 4K (who will be able to afford high end nvidia) he will need to upgrade his GPU anyway. Anyone who buys a "high end" AMD rebadge/card needs their brain to be examined immediately.

Oh ASRock boards also have some of the worst return rates. So avoid them like the plague. Gigabyte are the most reliable. MSI generally tops them for features/price at the sacrifice of reliability.

Only regarding the performance the difference is not much. But there are huge differences between the features the chipsets provide. Such as more SATAIII ports, M.2 slots (with NVMe support), DDR4 (good for future, since you can keep your RAM and upgrade the rest. If you buy DDR3 now, you have to buy DDR4 again later), better power efficiency. Just to name the most important ones...

You will need the 2600K for overclock.... also, overclocking does not always success and you risk damaging your hardware, esspecially if you are unexperienced. But used hardware might be an option if you don't need/want the features coming with the latest platform. The 2600 is even at stock settings fast enough for latest games.

I don't agree on that - the Hawaii series (290/290X) were pretty good GPUs regarding the performance. Only the power consumption could be better. The R9 390/390X are also Hawaii chips. And we already have games that can run out of memory on 4GB cards and they are getting more and more. In my opinion the 390(X) are a pretty good value at the moment, plus they don't have this bullshit memory bug like the GTX 970 cards.

I'm looking forward for the new HBM based cards.... that's really nice technology AMD made there.

I work in this business and I can't confirm that. There is no difference between Asus/Asrock/Gigabyte/MSI regarding the number of returns. Only Intel, when they were still producing desktop boards, was like far below the manufacters mentioned above, they had best reliability.

All of which means he has to go over his budget though, which he is already stretching. M.2 is negligible, DDR4 point is true but Samo is not one to upgrade often.

i7 2600 non K overclocks to 4.2 on Z77 as you can change the multiplier (limited to 42). I have one myself. No voltage change required. Safe as anything to do. And actually stock settings is not enough to power dual GPU, and you need to around 3.6-4 to get the full use of your GPUs. 980ti SLI will be bottlenecked even by a 4.2GHz 2600.

Which games at 1080p use 4GB? I've never used the entirety of my 3GB. The 970 is vastly more energy efficient and either faster or only a few FPS slower. Also lets look at the AMD fury... it is hilariously bad compared to the 980 and 980ti. The fact they all come with watercooling should tell you something about the efficiency of AMD gpus. Oh and lets not get started on AMD's latest driver wonders. Latest = GTA V performance fine, BF4 broken. Older = GTA V broken, BF4 fine.

My source works in the support department from one of the biggest part suppliers in the UK. So at least in the UK, ASRock returns are higher.
