Mapping Spotlight - Episode 1

Post by TheSold3y »

Hello Everybody and welcome to the new "Mapping Spotlight"! I created this because I think new maps deserve more attention. I have the feeling that the most guys dont even care about maps that are made for the community of Republic Commando to increase their fun. Aren´t you bored of playing Engine all the time? Aren´t you bored of using the same tactics in any game? I am. So this is a chance to make community maps more popular! Some people already use community maps in interns and scrims but not always. We can change that with great new maps which are quite good balanced.

This is Episode 1 of the Mapping Spotlight and there will follow more! In every Spotlight I will present you a new map of the Republic Commando Community. I will test, make screenshots and rate the map fairly. So let´s start! Today I start with a map made by myself because its the newest I know at the moment.

Map Name: Radiation
Gamemodes: DM, TDM & CTF
File Name: ctf_radiation
Style: Engine/Jungle
Players: max. 5v5

Summary of the Map:
The map Radiations is a really big map and can be compared to Engine. The Design is mostly in the same style as Engine but there are used many different statics meshes and even new ones. The Jungle part is really good looking. It is some kind of a Cave inside the space station where the map is set. The Mapper changed the whole Map except of some old parts you would still remember when looking at it. Additionally you can find MANY details and eastereggs inside the map. But of course there are still negative aspects about the map. Many Glitches are still aviable on Static Meshes and other places. Even some Texture bugs can be found on Radiation. You might ask yourself why the map is called Radiation? Because there is radiation you can see on CTF_Radiation.

The Lightning of the Map creates a really good athmosphere and is mostly well placed. On some places there might be some Lightning bugs that cant be fixed. These lightning bugs dont destroy the right feeling of the map. To enjoy the composition of lightning and static meshes I would suggest plaing the map on maximum brightness level 5. If you have selected a brighter level, the feeling doesnt really come up to you. Also a good thing is that the map is full of sound effects. In the Jungle you can hear apes and in the near of consoles you have some "beeep" sound effects which makes the map feel more realistic. You may not mind some visual effects like smoke & sparks. I didnt notice any visual bugs but I am not sure that I didnt see a single one.

Score: 9/10

+ working map
+ many details
+ good lightning
+ good sounds
+ great balance
+ requires tactical teamplay
+ just a few bugs
+ no confusing architecture

- too many glitches
- some texture issues (size/position)

+/- copied parts of Engine
+/- Hallways without many static meshes
