Inspector Hangover investigates (Aytsef)
As I stood over Mr. Williams, lying on his desk, I asked the Servant, Mr. Roberts what had happened.
“Well I was closing the front door when I heard the voices from the library. I was shocked because I didn’t know that Mr. Willams had a visitor but just as I got near the library door …”
“Yes go on Mr. Roberts” I said.
“Yes Inspector Hangover – I heard the shot, for a second I was confused, then I opened the library door and Mr. Willams was lying face forward over his desk, a bullet wound in his head. I saw a piece of paper clasped in his right hand and then a weird sensation of fear shivered up my spine. I somehow realised I wasn’t alone.“
“Did you spot someone?” I interrupted.
“No, I didn’t see anyone but I somehow knew that the murderer was there. I had the feeling that he was waiting so that he could get the piece of paper from Mr Williams.”
“Did you take it Mr. Roberts?” I said.
“I did Inspector Hangover. That is — I put it into a book that was on Mr Williams desk.”
“But there is no book on the desk” I said.
“He must have taken it after all. I even remember the name of the book sir, it was the "A night at the races". I quickly put the paper between pages 77 and 78 but just as I did, the intruder sprang out from the door behind me. I ran after him and the next thing I knew, someone hit me over the head.”
“No Mr. Roberts, it didn’t happen that way did it?” I said. “Hold out your hands. Your under arrest for the suspicion of murder of your employer Mr. Williams.”
What was the one clue that told Inpesctor Hangover that the servant was lying?
