I just got CoD4 and i cant launch multiplayer. It goes to a black screen and then returns to desktop saying CoD4 encountered an error and needs to close.
Does anyone know how to fix this please, because i really want to play the game online
Before reading: This post assumes that you are on Windows XP or Vista. If you are on a free OS such as any Linux distribution, this post may not help you as much. The first note may help, and possibly a reinstall, but due to many discrepancies with games on Linux builds, it may not fix the issue. You may have to use a Windows environment simulator such as W.I.N.E. or something else. Good luck if thats the case.
Singleplayer and Multiplayer settings are independent of each other (I.E. changing textures to High in SP will not change textures to High in MP). There are a couple things you can try to do:
1.If you have been launching MP through Singleplayer (the main menu button), try instead by launching it directly, the launcher is in the game files. If you have been launching through the launched, try launching through the singleplayer menu.
2. If you are playing on Vista, right click and hit Run as Administrator under the MP launcher. Better yet, turn off UAC if you are smart with computers and know what to not get yourself into.
3. !~READ THIS ONE ESPECIALLY~! If the errors persist, it would be very helpful if you would do the following for me:
I. Go to start<run or press the windows key + R
II. Type in dxdiag and hit enter
III. Wait for the loading bar on the new window that opened to finish loading
IV. Look for a button on the bottom of the window that says "Save as Text File" or something similar.
V. Upload the newly formed text file to a file sharing service such as megaupload.com or any of your preferred uploading sites.
VI. Paste the link to the file in a post on the forums.
With this information, I/we may be able to determine whether the issue has to do with your system (I.E. card isn't supporting shaders) or if there is some other problem with running it (sometimes just a bad install).
ok i had a big prob with my cod4
if you are using a vista check all your drivers..
the one that caused me trouble was the sound driver.
if you have a problem with the driver unistall it and then restart your compy.
then i think is will be fixed if you are having trouble with the driver.

Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are mine.
well i can be like i had ^^ i couldn´t start multiplayer first eather^^
then i know why..
When u install it on Vista...vista blocks the program!.
So simply just denie the blocking.....
